The Beirut
International Airport is the vital facility that plays a
major role in linking Lebanon with outside world and
enriches the business and tourist sectors of the economy.
Therefore, it follows that its development will surely
lead to invigorating the flow of businessmen, tourism and
air cargo, attracting major international airlines, and
increasing transit traffic. Further, this development
will have a positive impact on the Lebanese economy as a
whole contributing to the return of international
investments. This shall improve the competitive abilities
of Lebanon and enhance Beirut's role as a major
commercial center in the area, and Lebanon as an
important center of tourism.
The airport
rehabilitation project was drawn up for the modernization
and extension of its installations in order to raise its
capacity to six million passengers per year,
supply it with modern equipment, information and
announcement systems. In addition, the construction of a
new runway, on land partly reclaimed from the sea, will
make it possible to change navigation direction from the
present course, which passes over the area of Ras Beirut.
